About us

The advent of digital broadcasting in Nigeria and the ever increasing number of public and private media houses in the country today has necessitated the training of the practitioners in these institutions.

Unfortunately, it does not appear that there are enough practical and professional training outlets for this horde of media practitioners.

The West Africa Broadcast and Media Academy (WABMA®),  is envisioned therefore, to bridge this yawning gap in the training of media professionals with a view to providing the needed content, while at the same time, upholding the highest critical, intellectual and ethical values of the media.

WABMA® ignites the creative genius in students and properly hones the skill of practitioners to pursue successful careers in the public and private media as well as the creative industries and new media.

The Academy is conceived primarily to train professionals and aspiring media practitioners (broadcast and print) to learn the rudiments and art of excellent presentation, production and reportage for different media, especially radio and television.

The institution is also for students who may not necessarily be broadcast or journalism graduates but who have reasonable passion and potential, for practical vocational training in broadcast journalism, presentation and programming.

Trainees in presentation would however, need to first scale through an audition. Unlike the journalism courses though, any adult could apply regardless of their qualifications or field of specialty, including businessmen and politicians interested in media and public speaking skills.

Initial courses on offer – presentation, production, journalism and new media.

The Institution runs multi-disciplinary short-term specialized certificate courses, as a finishing school for professional certification.

The curriculum is  an intense and rigorous course module, which approximates real work environment, for faster, well grounded and practical skill acquisition.

The curriculum also offers robust interactive in-campus and online courses. Besides, collaboration with a next-door University campus radio affords students essential hands-on practical training and unique on-air experience.

It also affords students easy placement on the Supervised and Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES); not least, is unfettered access to language laboratories as well as live and production studios.

The courses are to be held in different sessions –

  • Six weeks for Basic course
  • Six weeks for Intermediate course
  • Eight weeks for Advanced course
  • 2 days – 1 week short courses
